...He was a carpenter and a blacksmith, was in civil war, and owned 40 acres NW SW Sec.8 T5N,R2E in 1874

...according to Illinois State Archives Civil War Service Report, his first name was listed as 'Garland', and he was 38 years old, 6'1", with light hair, blue eyes and fair complexion, shown a home county of [Adair Co] KY, and a residence of [Marion Co] IL when he was enrolled into service on August 9, 1862 and was given the rank of 'Sergeant.' He was Mustered out on June 6, 1865 in Washington DC with the rank of Second Lieutenant.
